BEFORE DAWN (2013)

Alex and Meg's marriage is falling apart and so in order to have some quality time together away from the pressure of work and their young family, they have rented a charming little cottage in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. However unfortunately for them, this particular weekend it turns out that the world itself is falling apart too...

Mr Jim Moon takes a look at a cracking new British zombie movie, starring and created by Joanne Mitchell and Dominic Brunt!

HYPNOBOBS 110 - Black Mirrors

In a change to the published schedule, we're taking a break from exploring the wonders of the Newman-verse in order to talk about one of the best pieces of television in a long while that aired just this week. Joining Mr Jim Moon are Odile Thomas (of Sending a Wave and Highway to Mars) and Lee Medcalf (of the Black Dog Podcast) to discuss the most recent episode of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror 'White Bear'.  In a very spoiler-heavy show - you have been warned - we get to grips with the many interesting questions raised by this particular episode, chat about the show in general and wander into many strange techno-paranoid tangents!

COLDBROOK by Tim Lebbon

Yes, it's another fine volume from the folks at Hammer! However this time, rather than being a novel spawned by one of their vintage horrors, this is an entirely new work from the pen of Mr Tim Lebbon!

HYPNOBOBS 109 - Master of the Universes Part 1

This week Mr Jim Moon is literally emptying entire shelves of the Great Library of Dreams to bring you this epic guide to the wonderful fantastic fiction of Mr Kim Newman. In this first part, we look at his early novels and stories, uncover the truth behind the shadowy Peace and Love Corporation, delve into the works of his alter ego Mr Jack Yeovil, visit the Dark Future, roam the Old World of Warhammer, attend an orgy of blood parasites, and take a trip to the United Socialist States of America!

VAMPIRE CIRCUS

Vampire Circus (1972) was one of the more unusual tales of the undead produced by the legendary Hammer Films. Director Robert Young filled the story with dark magic and haunting imagery, bringing us a dark fairy tale rather than the usual Victorian gents stake down a bloodsucking aristocrat routine.

However now the sinister Circus of Nights is once more pulling into town, this time as a new novel from Hammer Books by horror veteran Marc Morris...

The Unnatural History of the Werewolf

As this week's Hypnobobs is somewhat delayed this week and it was Lon Chaney Jnr's birthday yesterday,  we thought we represent one of the highlights of last year's broadcasting, our multi-episode exploration of the history of the werewolf!

We begin with some general thoughts on this famous monster as Mr Jim Moon ventures out into the light of the full moon to investigate the legend of the werewolf. As well as some chat about what the Wolf-Man means to us, we have readings of two classic lycanthropic tales - Gabriel-Ernest by Saki and High Moon by Tim Stout.

Continuing our investigations in werewolvery, Mr Jim Moon traces the  development and metamorphoses of werewolf lore down the ages, from the shamanic mists at the dawn of time to the blood-soaked pages of the Penny Dreadfuls!

Continuing our explorations of the history and mystery of the werewolf, Mr Jim Moon recounts the earliest manifestations of werewolvery in cinema and  attends the birth of the modern lycanthrope with a visit to Universal's The Werewolf of London (1935) starring Henry Hull.

This week Mr Jim Moon delving into the audio archives of the Great Library of Dreams to bring you two contrasting werewolf tales from the eerie world of old time radio! First we have The Werewolf from The Weird Circle, a radio play based upon The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains by Captain Frederick Marryat and then W Is For Werewolf from Dark Fantasy.

Continuing Werewolf Month here in the Great Library of Dreams, Mr Jim Moon rambles at great length about the 1941 Universal classic The Wolf Man starring Lon Chaney Jnr. Along the way we learn about the history of the Universal Monsters and just where the werewolf's vulnerability to silver actually comes from...

Concluding our history of werewolvery, Mr Jim Moon tracks the progeny of Universal's Wolf Man, tracing the influence of Mr Larry Talbot on lycanthropic cinema. Under the light of the silvery moon, we hunt down The Mad Monster, The Undying Monster and The Wolves of Malveneur, hear the Cry of the Werewolf and witness the Return of the Vampire, before uncovering his descendants are alive and well in the modern age in the shape of An American Werewolf in London and The Wolf Man remake.

HYPNOBOBS 108 - The Song of the Necromancer

Due to forces beyond even his control, this week sees Mr Jim Moon hurriedly cobbling together an episode. The result is a shorter but somewhat different edition of Hypnobobs, in which we take a fantastical voyage through an ocean of sound and music to explore a selection of the poetry of Clark Ashton Smith.

THE HILL-TOP by Clark Ashton Smith

The Hill-Top a poem by Clark Ashton Smith, read by Mr Jim Moon. First published in Selected Poems (1971).

The Hill-Top
by Clark Ashton Smith

Alone upon my hill-top,
After the ravelled rains,
I see the cloudy mountains,
I see the misty plains.

Fair is my hill, and rugged,
Where silken grasses grow,
And the drifted clouds go by me
More soft than woven snow.

The pale fantastic lichens
Make patterns on the stone,
And the oaks are old and dwarfèd
With golden mosses grown.

Beneath the ancient boulders
There dwells the shadowy fern;
And here the twisted pine-trees
To shapes of beauty turn.

I wander through the seasons
With thoughts of love and grief
That fall with the flowers of springtime
Or blow with the autumn leaf.

Between the plains and mountains,
Between the clouds and grass,
I find the dreams that linger,
And the fairer dreams that pass.

THE MESSENGERS by Clark Ashton Smith

The Messengers a poem by Clark Ashton Smith, read by Mr Jim Moon. Written on 21st May 1911 but first appeared in The Shadow of the Unattained: The Letters of George Sterling and Clark Ashton Smith (2005)

The Messengers
by Clark Ashton Smith

Catching a little wind’s unrest,
       The dandelion-crests dissolve,
Where swooping wings of air involve
And lift them to a scattered quest.

Snared in the tangled zephyr-coil,
They try the day to hidden ends—
       The messengers that Beauty sends
With words of waking to the soil.
